Benches were created to make life easier. Nowadays, not only do they make life easier, they give a certain accent of style as well. And what better way to stylize a neat looking bench than to add a bench cushion that blends perfectly.

A beautiful complement to any indoor or outdoor bench is a customized bench cushion. A simple boring garden bench may change the whole mood of a garden when topped with a stylish bench cushion accent. Seeing a cushion on a bench provides a comfy feel to the garden. A living room bench made of wood will look plain and simple unless a bench cushion that complements the floor or wall paint is added. A splash of accent can turn a whole view around. A good thing about bench cushions is that they are fairly easy to make, and even easier to modify in the future.

A hard bench can be turned into a comfortable seat for guests by adding simple but stylish bench cushions. Fairly easy to use, the first thing needed is a foam cushion. A foam cushion is available at any upholstery store and some fabric stores. After choosing the right cushion with the right feel, choose a home decorating fabric that will complement the color scheme of the room where the bench will be placed. After which, a sewing kit is needed and then the appropriate fabric that may complement, or provide contrast to the room or outdoor place.

Basic sewing supplies are needed - sewing machine, ,sewing needles, straight pins, shear scissors, a suitable work table, a fabric-marking chalk, a tape measure, and thread. Soft fabrics, upholstery, foam adhesive, cording, and foot long zippers are needed. If a sewing machine is not available, manual stitching is always a fun activity.

Measuring the bench would be a good first step. These measurements will be needed to determine the required dimensions of the foam cushion and amount of fabric needed to cover them. The length and width of the bench is needed since the foam cushions need to be pre-cut. The number of cushions made for each bench should be the same as the number of people the bench can hold. The thickness should be relative to the height and depth of the bench. To determine amount of fabric needed for the bench cushion, simply add 2" to both the length and width measurements of the cushion. Multiply each dimension by two and then add the cushion's thickness to each.

After measuring, sew the pieces together and make sure the fabric covered cord is inserted into the seams. The zipper should also be hidden by a lapel to give a more finished use. After sewing, wash the cushion cover, insert the foam and the bench cushion is good to go!
