Is an Upholstered Storage Bench Right for
Me?
George Carlin once said that life is a series of finding a place for your stuff. After all,
isn't a house, aside from providing a sleeping area, a storage facility for your things. Isn't the purchase of a
larger house mainly a necessary action taken to hold more of the things you've accumulated? Either way, garages and
attics are filled with "stuff" in nearly every house in the developed world. Let us not forget basements, either;
those large, dank dwellings that house the items we are not currently requiring at the moment. The problem, though,
is that storage is anything but pretty. Aside from the rooms in which things are stored, it is difficult to find
beauty in piles of cardboard boxes, toy chests, and any general container that is meant to hold "junk". Because of
this problem with storage and unsightliness, the upholstered storage bench market has been seeing
a curious upswing.
The fact that it is startling to see a rise in the upholstered storage bench market isn't because the idea of
decorated storage units is a stupid one. The matter of note is that, as a rule, the more decorative and paneled a
bench is, the more expensive they are. Storage benches rarely enter pricey territory because they are generally not
made with frills and are meant for minimal attention. The upholstered versions of these benches, however, do fetch
prices in the hundreds and the fact that an upswing in sales for this niche is happening in a recession is
puzzling.
Either way, the concept for an upholstered storage bench is sound. Eventually, the accumulation of possessions
will reach a point where there is simply no room to hide things anymore. As that happens, storage containers are a
necessity but many are anything but pleasing to the eye. With decorative benches that house dark oak leather and
ottomans that store items, a happy medium can be reached that can in fact contribute to the overall atmosphere of
any room. Take a garage as a good example. Most garages are definitely not the most beautiful rooms in their
respective houses. Nor are they expected to be. After all, the home for auto parts and tools needn't be a setpiece
for Masterpiece Theatre. On the other hand, there is no law stating that nice, decorative touches wouldn't enhance
the flavor of a garage and make it almost a third bedroom in a manner of speaking. Who really stores their cars in
the garage anyways? How many teenagers have lived in a garage at some point? Quite a few, as it turns out. At any
rate, the fact of the matter is that storage doesn't have to be a dirty word. A few extra dollars can mean the
difference between a touch of class or a box of rags.
