A Guide to Outdoor Storage Benches

Benches have always been lovely accents to your house’s rooms or patio. Outdoor benches in particular usually come in wood with the most intricate carvings that not only add elegance to your patio, it also blends well with the natural environment. The most sensible of these outdoor benches are the outdoor storage benches. Both functional and beautiful, it’s a very practical investment to add to your patio furniture. It can also be useful as a storage area for a variety of things in your household.

Just outside your front door beside the welcome mat, it can serve both as a waiting area and storage for umbrellas, raincoats, shoes, and so on for easy access when you’re leaving your house. It can also store your house slippers when you’ve just gotten home and your shoes are too dirty to bring in.

Because the outdoor storage bench is usually placed in the middle of a garden to entertain guests, it’s also the ideal place to store your gardening tools like hedge trimmers, clippers, gloves, and more. Are you fond of outdoor barbecues and grills with your friends? The storage bench gives you an accessible repository for the equipment you need, instead of having to store them inside your house.

They can also serve as “treasure chests” for your children. Outdoor toys such as pool equipment, water guns, or anything that strikes them can be kept inside and out of everyone’s way. The storage encourages imagination and gives a sense of privacy to your child. It can even store their collections for them.

There are a few things to consider, however, before buying your storage bench. First, most of these are available as wood. These are subject to mildew and even rotting when they are placed in a humid environment. To maintain your wooden bench in top condition, it’s best to place them in a sheltered or roofed area where they can be protected from most of the elements. Second, make sure that the benches are sealed properly when they’re closed. The last thing you want is to have cats, rats, and other animals getting into your storage bench and having their way with your possessions.

The last and possibly the most important consideration is the durability of the bench you would need. Aside from wood, outdoor storage benches are also available in other forms. Recycled plastic can withstand almost any kind of abuse -- be it from extreme weather or heavy use. Concrete benches are beautiful to look at and can even have customized messages chiseled on them; unfortunately, they’re not very comfortable to sit on. Cushions are always a good idea on any bench, as long as they are properly stored during the winter months to prevent their deterioration. Each type of bench has its advantages and will certainly serve you well if it’s the most suitable for you.
