Choosing a Hallway Bench

When designing a room, it is important to make sure that every aspect of that room coincides with the overall theme or motif. If even one loose end is left untreated you run the risk of having your entire room fall apart. Whether you are designing a garage, a nook, or a hallway, it is important to stick to these precepts lest you wish to run the risk of being insulted and derided behind your back for your less than stellar design skills. Though there are many difficult areas of a home to decorate properly, none are as hard to perfect as the hallway. A hallway is widely considered to be the fallopian tube of the house, as it were, and its classic purpose is to set up for the guest the overall theme that you're going for in your designing. In other words, a hallway should reflect the room in which it is leading to so that you can have a complete and whole theme worked out. Framed pictures lining the hallway walls are always a great way to set up the concept you're going for but a hallway bench may in fact be the best option for many homeowners.

There are many different kinds of hallway benches but rest assured that we are not recommending that you put something along the lines of a garden bench or a park bench square in the middle of your hallway. That wouldn't just be unfeasible; it would be downright moronic! A hallway bench is generally any kind of bench that is used for storage. People use storage benches for storing shoes, antiques, and generally whatever they wish to store. Don't mistake this for a chest or a bureau, though. These storage items are nice and they can really bring a room together but they don't belong in the hallway in the same way that a bench doesn't belong in a bedroom. The two are exclusive to their domains.

You'll want your hallway bench to sit against one of the walls in the hallway and it should look appropriately ornate according to the theme that you're trying to express. The key here, though, is to have something that someone can sit on or lay across while they lounge in the hallway reading a book or simply chatting. Thus, you'll want something that isn't too wide so that people can walk comfortably around it. You'll want it to be purposeful too, though, and so make sure it is deep enough to store whatever it is that you wish to store in it. Keep in mind that you'll want to choose the wood for your hallway bench carefully as well; cherry may be used to complement similar wood themes like walnut, for instance. Essentially, you don't want too much juxtaposition in your wood or else you once again run the risk of your whole theme falling apart. Remember, though, that you may be draping a rug or some kind of blanket over the bench. This can be tacky in some instances but clever in others. Try to come up with a plan before you set out to buy a hallway bench to ensure that you don't buy something on a whim that ends up disappointing you. Last, but not least, have a good time decorating your beautiful home.
