Bench Furniture – a reflection of human progress

Since the dawn of time, man has been working hard to create things what will make life easier. And from the earliest anal of recorded history, man has built and utilized furniture. Furniture according to historical accounts was first used in Central Asia and the Mediterranean areas.

The Egyptians, who at the present are still associated with fine furniture, created some of history’s first functional furniture. Those created by the Egyptians were intended to make every day living easier and to provide comfort. Bench furniture that we are so familiar with today may also have been created by the Egyptians.

A bench is a long seat that may be freestanding, fixed to the ground, or fixed to the wall. During the medieval times, they were the most common seats because chairs were luxuries reserved for the higher strata of society. Bench furniture not only functioned as seats but sometimes was wide enough for both eating and sleeping.

Nowadays, a bench is a type of furniture where several people may sit at the same time. Usually, wood is the preferred material for making bench furniture. However, depending on the intended usage for it, certain materials may also be used for creating them. Some can be made from metal, stone or even artificial materials.

Sometimes, bench furniture pieces are named after the place where they are used. Public parks are not parks if they don’t have park benches for people to sit on them. Beautiful gardens are accented by the right choice of garden bench. Car benches are the usual car backseats. Porch swings are leisure benches found in front porches and are used when people at home just want to pass the time. Most of the time, benches are named after their specific type of use. Church pews with kneeling pads are those that we see in houses of worship. A weight training bench is used for certain weight training exercises such as bench press, military press, inclined bench press and reversed bench press. A lovers’ lane bench or courting bench is a two-seater where lovers can spend countless hours talking and chatting and doing what-not. Swing seats are moveable suspended benches, usually by thick chains, found in children’s playgrounds. A piano bench is intended to seat one person but sometimes can accommodate two people who want to play music together. Friendship benches are also found in playgrounds and are intended to give privacy for people who want to talk. An office bench is used as waiting seats inside an office. Work benches function as strong worktables for carpenters and other mechanics. Sometimes, the word bench metaphorically symbolizes an authority figure such as a judge or a high ranking public official.

Simple as it may be, bench furniture only shows the capacity of man to adapt to its environment. It was one of the first pieces of furniture created by man and has evolved beautifully over time. It has been an expression of art, of power, of function, and of necessity. Its progress and dynamics of use shows how complex the human capacity is to do things and make life easier.
