All About Benches
Benches have played a role
in some of the most memorable experiences in many people’s
lives. Whether it is a couple sitting on a bench holding each
other’s hand watching the sunset or a mom resting while reading
a book with her child falling asleep beside her, these pieces
of furniture have played a largely unnoticed
role.
A classic
bench is typically made out of wood, as can be seen in
different parks and picnic groves around the world. However,
different variations have appeared throughout the years, and
now a bench can be made out of wood and synthetic materials.
People have created different variations in order to them
tailor-fit them to the different settings that they will be
used in. A bench usually consists of an arm rest on each end to
provide support for people to lean on. Many people and
companies have also donated this furniture to different
establishments like schools, parks and malls, and this is
represented usually by a plaque with the name of the person or
company engraved on it.
All around
the world, benches have become an integral element in different
kinds of societies and lifestyles. Whether you are sitting on a
classic garden bench or a snow covered one, they serve
different kinds of roles. In fact, a bench is not necessarily
limited to something you can sit on anymore.
Many people
use a bench in gyms as their support for lifting weights and
getting in shape. They perform a strength training exercise
called a bench press that helps tone their pectoral major
muscles, deltoids and triceps among others. This exercise is
used mainly in weight training, bodybuilding in order to
strengthen the chest area and keep in shape.
A bench
also plays a significant role in a church, either as part of a
church pew or as a communion bench. A church pew is where the
congregation sits and performs the different ceremonies. This
is usually equipped with a kneeling pew for the members to pray
and meditate. Additionally, the communion bench is also
available for the congregation to kneel on in order to pray
after the ceremony.
Finally,
the bench plays a significant role in the court of law, as this
is where the judge is seated and passes the verdict. The bench
in a courtroom is actually a raised desk, and adjacent to this
is seal of jurisdiction as well as the appropriate flags of the
federal and state governments.
Through
these examples, it is clear that benches have been seamlessly
integrated in our everyday lives. The mere fact that we do not
notice them around us anymore doesn’t make them any less
important; rather they have become some of the most reliable
constants in our everyday living. Indeed, everyone needs to
stop and take a break from time to time. And what better place
to park yourself than on a comfortable bench, while watching
the sun set on another busy day.
